Bukowski’s muse, her sculpture — and the paintings Matt Sesow made for her poems, back in Los Angeles after seventeen years

On Saturday, June 20, 2026, the sculptor and poet Linda King — Charles Bukowski’s partner in the early 1970s, the “Lydia” of his novel Women — was honored with an exhibition at BLVK Book on the 8th floor of the Beverly Center. Her original Bukowski bust stood in the room with her busts of seven Beat poets. The two guest artists were Washington, DC painters Matt Sesow and Dana Ellyn. Sesow brought original paintings from Bukowski Undigested, the 2008 book of King’s poems he illustrated; Ellyn brought sixteen new paintings made from King’s memoir.

The story

A twenty-one-year arc, back to Los Angeles

  1. “Collateral Damage.” Theatre director Raymond Shurtz builds a Cheap Theatrix production at Metro Arts Institute around Matt Sesow’s 8 × 9 foot painting Collateral Damage (Living Hell): ten playwrights each write a ten-minute play in response to it. One of them is Raymond’s aunt, Linda King. Through Raymond, Linda and Matt meet. The production is named Best Experimental Theater of 2005 by the East Valley Tribune. Press release and review, full text ↓
  2. Bukowski Undigested. Linda King’s book of poems about Bukowski, illustrated with full-color paintings by Matt Sesow, is released at The Beat Museum. Linda reads; Sesow’s originals are on display with her busts of Bukowski, Norse, Winans and Ferlinghetti. The first printing sells out. Matt’s 2008 page, full text ↓
  3. City Lights. Matt Sesow and Linda King also showed together at “City Lights” — most likely City Lights in San Francisco, the Beat bookstore founded by Lawrence Ferlinghetti, whose bust Linda made. (Matt confirms the show; the date and room are still being traced.)
  4. The 1st Annual Bukowski Festival. Scott Dylyn Hall’s festival at The Elephant Theater, Santa Monica Boulevard: eight poets who knew Bukowski, the 1973 Hackford documentary, and “Bukowski inspired art” by Matt Sesow and Linda King — her original clay Bukowski bust beside his Bukowski Undigested paintings. Matt called it “the first annual Bukowski show.” Photographs, poster and forum threads ↓
  5. The return. Linda King’s exhibition at BLVK Book, Beverly Center. Her son Scott Dylyn Hall hosts and produces; her nephew Raymond King Shurtz — who introduced everyone in Phoenix — plays live; Matt Sesow and Dana Ellyn are the guest artists. “I have shown with her three times before,” Sesow wrote on May 27.
  6. Afterward. Linda King’s nude sculptures and racehorse paintings at Penthouse Art Gallery, Pasadena. More ↓

Opening night

Family, friends, collectors and poets filled the 8th floor of the Beverly Center for a night of voices, music and 1970s fashion. Matt Sesow and Dana Ellyn flew in from Washington and hung the show the day before. “Hung the show yesterday and looking forward to the show in Beverly Hills tonight with Linda King and family,” Sesow posted that afternoon; the next day: “Fun time last night in Los Angeles … thanks to Scott D Hall, Linda King and Raymond King Shurtz.”

Collector Jeff Brivic also showed part of his Sesow and Ellyn collection at the Beverly Center, on view through July 20 (brivic.sesow.com).

Guest artist

Matt Sesow

Matt Sesow (born 1966, Omaha, Nebraska) is a self-taught painter who has lived and painted full time in Washington, DC since 2001. At eight he was struck by the propeller of a landing airplane and lost his dominant left hand; he taught himself to paint with his right. He has sold more than 17,000 original paintings directly to collectors in more than 40 countries, and the American Visionary Art Museum holds his work in its permanent collection.

In 2008 he illustrated Linda King’s Bukowski Undigested: more than 100 paintings made after reading the poems she wrote while she was with Bukowski and after. He brought surviving originals back to Los Angeles for this show, and in the weeks before it he made new Bukowski and Beat-poet paintings — “Great Poets,” “More Great Poets,” “Raw Talent,” “Raw,” “Mockingbird,” “Undefeated.” In September and October 2026 the thread continued in his “Game Changers (Poets)” grids honoring Bukowski, Linda King and the poets she sculpted.

Dana Ellyn

Dana Ellyn, a Washington, DC painter (BFA, George Washington University), made a new body of work for the show from Linda King’s memoir, poetry and sculpture. Six were on view in Los Angeles; the rest were offered from her studio. In her words: “The Dancing — Linda dancing, the thing Bukowski couldn’t stand, and the spark of more than one breakup.” “The Bust — the bust Linda King sculpted of Bukowski, the one passed back and forth between them through years of breakups and reconciliations.” danaellyn.com/lindaking_bukowski

The artist being honored

Linda King

Linda King (born 1940) grew up in Boulder, Utah, one of the last towns in the United States to get a road. She is a sculptor, poet, playwright and former actress. Between 1970 and 1975 she was Charles Bukowski’s on-and-off partner; she is the model for Lydia Vance in his 1978 novel Women and the dedicatee of Mockingbird Wish Me Luck (1972). She lived in Phoenix from 1975 and later in San Francisco.

She told her side in Loving and Hating Charles Bukowski: A True Story (Wild Ocean Press, 2014) and in Bukowski Undigested (2008), the poems Matt Sesow illustrated. She edited the little magazine Purr and has read with Bukowski, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg.

“After the reading I said to him, ‘You don’t seem to like women much.’ He said, ‘I love women.’ He announced the party was at his house. I hit the road for Utah.”

In the room

Eight heads, one generation

The busts Linda King made of Bukowski and the poets around him, as presented at the exhibition (texts from lindakingarts.com).

Charles Bukowski, bust by Linda King

Charles Bukowski 1920 – 1994

Born 1920, Andernach, Germany; died 1994, San Pedro, California. Post Office, factory floor, racetrack, rooming house, and finally, very late, the writing desk. By the time he died he had published forty-five books.

The Linda King connection. Linda King met Bukowski in 1970, already at work sculpting heads of California poets, and offered to do his. The relationship ran roughly five years and was the engine of Women (1978), where she appears as Lydia Vance; Mockingbird Wish Me Luck (1972) carries her name on its dedication page. The bust outlasted the relationship and outlasted him — and was the centerpiece of this exhibition.

Lawrence Ferlinghetti, bust by Linda King

Lawrence Ferlinghetti 1919 – 2021

Co-founded City Lights Booksellers & Publishers in San Francisco in 1953 — the press that published Allen Ginsberg’s Howl and Other Poems in 1956. A Coney Island of the Mind (1958).

The Linda King connection. Linda’s bust of Ferlinghetti honors not only his poetry but his publishing — the work that made the Beats possible as a movement.

Jack Hirschman, bust by Linda King

Jack Hirschman 1933 – 2021

San Francisco’s fourth Poet Laureate (2006–2009), and for half a century the conscience of North Beach.

The Linda King connection. On November 7, 2010, Linda unveiled her bust of Hirschman at The Beat Museum alongside her bust of Neeli Cherkovski.

Jack Micheline, bust by Linda King

Jack Micheline 1929 – 1998

Born Harvey Martin Silver in the Bronx; street poet, painter and performer. His first book, River of Red Wine (1958), carried an introduction by Jack Kerouac.

The Linda King connection. He showed up at Linda’s door in Phoenix asking for his head to be sculpted; she finished it in one day. (Her full account is transcribed below.)

Harold Norse, bust by Linda King

Harold Norse 1916 – 2009

Friend and protégé of William Carlos Williams; correspondent of Ginsberg, Burroughs and Bukowski. Hotel Nirvana (1974); Memoirs of a Bastard Angel (1989).

The Linda King connection. Linda’s bust honors a poet often kept just outside the official Beat canon.

A. D. Winans, bust by Linda King

A. D. Winans b. 1936

Native San Franciscan; founded Second Coming Press in 1972 and published Bukowski, Micheline and dozens of others.

The Linda King connection. One of the last people alive who knew Bukowski as a working friendship. He blurbed Linda’s memoir.

Neeli Cherkovski, bust by Linda King

Neeli Cherkovski 1945 – 2024

Met Bukowski in 1967; wrote Hank: The Life of Charles Bukowski (1991), still the standard biography.

The Linda King connection. Linda unveiled her bust of Cherkovski alongside her Hirschman bust at The Beat Museum in November 2010.

Robinson Jeffers, bust by Linda King

Robinson Jeffers 1887 – 1962

Built Tor House and Hawk Tower on the Carmel coast by hand. Roan Stallion, Tamar and Other Poems (1925).

The Linda King connection. The eldest figure in the room — the only one Linda did not personally meet — and his presence is intentional.

The first time: the 1st Annual Bukowski Festival

Seventeen years before BLVK Book, Linda King’s clay Bukowski bust and Matt Sesow’s Bukowski Undigested paintings shared a room in Los Angeles for the first time. The 1st Annual Bukowski Festival: Celebration of Literature, Poetry & Art — produced by Linda’s son, Scott Dylyn Hall — filled The Elephant Theater, 6324 W. Santa Monica Boulevard, one block west of Vine, on Saturday, March 28, 2009, from 8 PM. It was timed to the City of Los Angeles naming Bukowski’s De Longpre Avenue bungalow, “Bukowski’s Court,” Historic-Cultural Monument No. 912.

The featured poets had all known Bukowski: Neeli Cherkovski, Linda King, Gerald Locklin, Joan Jobe Smith, Fred Voss, Paul Vangelisti, S.A. Griffin and Raymond King Shurtz. The poster lists “Bukowski inspired art by” Matt Sesow, Linda King, Bill Dambrove, Mike Stilkey and Bruce Rubenstein. At 9:20 the room watched Taylor Hackford’s 1973 documentary Bukowski, and an open mic followed. Matt had announced it in December 2008: “‘Bukowski Undigested’ lives… looks like we (Linda/Scott King) will be part of a show around a Bukowski landmark dedication in March.” On his own site he called it the “1st Annual Bukowski show.”

When he got home, Linda King sent him back the original paintings and signed poems from the book. On April 15, 2009 he posted them in an album: “after i returned from my show in LA for the Bukowski festival, Linda King sent me back the paintings and signed poems from her ‘bukowski undigested’ book… i illustrated the book.” Those are the paintings that went back to Los Angeles in 2026.

SCOTT HALL ARRIVES IN STYLE TO HONOR HIS MOTHER’S LEGACY

There are moments in art and fashion when elegance transcends appearance and becomes an expression of devotion. Such was the case when Scott Hall @scott_dylyn_hall arrived at the iconic BLVKBOOK Art Gallery inside the famed Beverly Center in Los Angeles to celebrate the remarkable life and artistic legacy of his mother, the acclaimed artist Linda King.

Hall’s presence embodied a refined sophistication that felt both contemporary and timeless. With effortless confidence, he moved through the gallery’s luminous halls, carrying himself with the quiet grace of a man deeply connected to the significance of the evening. His polished style reflected an appreciation for creativity and culture, perfectly complementing the atmosphere of one of Los Angeles’ most celebrated artistic destinations.

Yet it was not fashion alone that made his arrival memorable. There was an unmistakable sense of pride and reverence in the way Hall engaged with guests, collectors, and admirers who gathered to honor Linda King’s extraordinary body of work.

His presence served as a living tribute to the woman whose artistic vision inspired generations and whose influence continues to resonate throughout the contemporary art world.

Set against the sophisticated backdrop of BLVKBOOK Art Gallery, the Linda King Art Exhibition became more than an exhibition. It transformed into a celebration of family, artistic heritage, and enduring creative excellence. As guests explored the collection and witnessed the powerful bond between mother and son, honoring not only Linda King’s achievements as an artist but also the lasting legacy she leaves behind.

On an evening dedicated to art, memory, and inspiration, Scott Hall’s elegant arrival reminded everyone in attendance that true style is ultimately rooted in love, respect, and the preservation of a remarkable legacy.

"Linda King's Art, Books and Poetry" exhibit

venue: Blvkbook Art

where: Beverly Hills CA

when: June 2026

The exhibition celebrated the life and work of sculptor, poet, and author Linda King, whose decades-long creative career has often been viewed through the lens of her relationship with writer Charles Bukowski.

For the exhibition, Dana Ellyn created a new body of work inspired by Linda King's memoirs, poetry, sculpture, and remarkable life.

Bringing together King's sculpture, poetry, books, and archival materials, the exhibition sought to highlight her own artistic legacy while acknowledging the literary and cultural history that connected the two artists.

Washington, DC artists Dana Ellyn and Matt Sesow were invited as guest artists to create new paintings inspired by King, Bukowski, and the stories surrounding their remarkable partnership. Their work offered contemporary interpretations of the people, objects, and moments that shaped King's life and career, creating a visual dialogue between past and present while honoring an artist whose influence continues to resonate with new generations.

June 20 - July 20, 2026

Opening reception: June 20

The exhibition was presented at BLVK Book on the eighth floor of the Beverly Center in Los Angeles.

A young Linda King — sculptor and poet — in 1970s Los Angeles at the beginning of the women's liberation movement. She meets Charles Bukowski, underground writer of Notes of a Dirty Old Man, and offers to sculpt his head. During the sculpting of his acne-scarred face, he seduces her with his writing and wit. As they fall in love, the literary world falls in love with his terse, brutal style. The uncensored true story of their love affair, amidst the chaos of his new-found fame.

POSTED BY SCOTT DYLYN HALL · LINDA'S SON · 13 YEARS AGO ON YOUTUBE

LINDA KING is a sculptor, poet, playwright and former actress whose life was woven into the heart of the late twentieth-century Beat scene. Between 1970 and 1975 she was the on-and-off partner of Charles Bukowski, the model for Lydia Vance in his 1978 novel Women, and the dedicatee of his 1972 poetry collection Mockingbird Wish Me Luck. Bukowski named her, in letters and interviews, as one of the great loves of his life.

Linda met Bukowski when she was already at work on a series of sculpted busts of poets and offered to sculpt his head. That piece became a Bukowski totem — photographed for half a century, and now traveling to BLVK Book for this exhibition.

She wrote her own corrective. Loving and Hating Charles Bukowski, her memoir, and the poetry collection Bukowski Undigested — the book Matt Sesow illustrated in 2008 — are not nostalgia. They are first-person testimony from inside the storm.
— from the curator's notes

Her sculptural work extends well beyond Bukowski. The Beat constellation — Ferlinghetti, Hirschman, Micheline, Norse, Winans, Cherkovski, Locklin — sat for her, as did the long shadow of Robinson Jeffers. The figure work that runs alongside the portraits is unsparing: bronze nudes that prize weight and honesty over flattery.

In Linda's Own Words
ON FIRST MEETING CHARLES BUKOWSKI

I first met Charles Bukowski when Peter told me not to miss his first poetry reading at The Bridge. My husband had gone ahead with the divorce and it had become final. I went to the reading early and put pink stick-on dots on my maroon car. I was celebrating my divorce with a pink polka dot car that I was driving to Utah for the 4th of July. I was anxious to leave, but didn't want to miss Charles Bukowski's first reading.

After the reading I said to him, “You don't seem to like women much.” He said, “I love women.” He announced the party was at his house. I hit the road for Utah.

My dreams came into play with Bukowski telling me he needed help to get over a small hill to the grocery store. In the heavens I saw many things waiting for him — fame, fortune, readings, people. When I told him this dream he said he hadn't eaten for five days. Another dream showed him hanging off the edge of a cliff with no one around to help him but me. I protested telling my instructors — no, not him. I knew his reputation.

He left me for a younger woman with nice ankles. He always was a leg man.

LINDA KING — BUKOWSKI'S WILDEST LOVE

Scott Hall arrives in style to honor his mother's legacy.

"There are moments in art and fashion when elegance transcends appearance and becomes an expression of devotion. Such was the case when Scott Hall (@scott_dylyn_hall) arrived at the iconic BLVKBOOK Art Gallery inside the famed Beverly Center in Los Angeles to celebrate the remarkable life and artistic legacy of his mother, the acclaimed artist Linda King."

"Hall's presence embodied a refined sophistication that felt both contemporary and timeless. With effortless confidence, he moved through the gallery's luminous halls, carrying himself with the quiet grace of a man deeply connected to the significance of the evening. His polished style reflected an appreciation for creativity and culture, perfectly complementing the atmosphere of one of Los Angeles' most celebrated artistic destinations."

"Yet it was not fashion alone that made his arrival memorable. There was an unmistakable sense of pride and reverence in the way Hall engaged with guests, collectors, and admirers who gathered to honor Linda King's extraordinary body of work."

"His presence served as a living tribute to the woman whose artistic vision inspired generations and whose influence continues to resonate throughout the contemporary art world."

"Set against the sophisticated backdrop of BLVKBOOK Art Gallery, the Linda King Art Exhibition became more than an exhibition. It transformed into a celebration of family, artistic heritage, and enduring creative excellence. As guests explored the collection and witnessed the powerful bond between mother and son, honoring not only Linda King's achievements as an artist but also the lasting legacy she leaves behind."

SELF-TAUGHT PAINTER • DISABLED ARTIST • WASHINGTON, DC

At eight years old, Matt Sesow was struck by the propeller of a landing airplane; his dominant left hand was amputated. Self-taught, he turned that trauma into one of the most prolific careers in American art — more than 17,000 original paintings sold directly to collectors in 40+ countries, no galleries, no art school. KING × BUKOWSKI × SESOW

A TWENTY-ONE-YEAR ARC, RETURNING TO LOS ANGELES

2005. Phoenix, Arizona. Painter Matt Sesow makes Collateral Damage (Living Hell), an eight-by-nine-foot canvas. Theatre director Raymond Shurtz builds a Cheap Theatrix production around it — ten playwrights writing short pieces inspired by the painting. One of the playwrights is Raymond's aunt: Linda King. Through Raymond, Matt and Linda meet.

April 19, 2008. The Beat Museum in San Francisco. Linda reads from her new poetry collection, Bukowski Undigested. On the table beside her are the original color paintings by Sesow — illustrations for every poem. The first printing sells out.

2009. Sesow opens a solo Bukowski show in Los Angeles. Then the work sleeps.

June 20, 2026. Sesow and his wife, painter Dana Ellyn, return to LA as Linda's guest artists. The original Bukowski bust will be in the room. Some of the surviving Bukowski Undigested originals travel with Sesow. Linda's son, Scott Dylyn Hall, hosts and produces. Raymond — the man who introduced them all in Phoenix twenty-one years ago — takes the stage with live music.

This is what the exhibition is for.

LINDA KING — “CHARLES BUKOWSKI”
I first met Charles Bukowski when Peter told me not to miss his first poetry reading at The Bridge. My husband had gone ahead with the divorce and it had become final. I went to the reading early and put pink stick-on dots on my maroon car. I was celebrating my divorce with a pink polka dot car that I was driving to Utah for the 4th of July. I was anxious to leave, but didn’t want to miss Charles Bukowski’s first reading.
I told about my five years with Bukowski in my book, LOVING AND HATING CHARLES BUKOWSKI (Wild Ocean Press, San Francisco.) It can also be bought from Amazon.
After the reading I said to him, “You don’t seem to like women much.” He said, “I love women.” He announced the party was at his house. I hit the road for Utah.
My dreams came into play with Bukowski telling me he needed help to get over a small hill to the grocery store. In the heavens I saw many thing waiting for him, fame, fortune, readings, people, etc. When I told him this dream he said he hadn’t eaten for five days. Another dream showed him hanging off the edge of a cliff with no one around to help him but me. I protested telling my instructors—no…not him. I knew his reputation.
He left me for a younger woman with nice ankles. He always was a leg man.

LINDA KING — “JACK MICHELINE” (July 31, 2016)
I met Jack Micheline a couple of times at Bukowski’s place on DeLongpre when he was down from San Francisco. He had the reputation of being one of the best street poets ever. He had a very flamboyant way of reading and was very entraining as he seemed to be always on stage. I loved his images of life on the street and people he met, lived with or loved. When I was sculpturing Bukowski’s head, word got out that I sculptured writers, poets and artists. Years later when I left Bukowski and moved to Phoenix, Jack showed up at my door saying he wanted his head sculptured. The woman he was with dropped him off and I proceed to sculpture him. He only had one day so I put together the clay and worked almost without breaks all the next day until she picked him up to proceed on their travels. During breaks Jack painted a picture of me using paint straight from the tube. He painted one for my daughter as well.
His son, Vince Silvaer, contacted me not long after Jack died on the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) and wondered it I could come to San Francisco with Jack’s head when they named an Alley after him. I made fast arrangement for my daughter to pick me up and after about killing myself getting that head through the airport carried in a backpack. I made it…just barely. This is one of the poems I read at the dedication along with many other friends and poets.

RONDA SEIFERT (Linda’s niece) — December 9, 2022
Wow. I’m so glad my Aunt Linda King has shared some of her sculptures along with pictures of the subjects and stories about each one. She is such a talented sculptress and painter as well. The posts are public, so scan her page for her series of sculptures. So many that are just unbelievably like the subject. Sometimes I visit museums and see work displayed and I don’t understand why hers isn’t there instead. Check her work out.

[The card in the photograph, by Linda King:]
CHARLES BUKOWSKI — Burbank, Calif.
BUKOWSKI was sculpted at my place in Burbank, Calif. He came around the hill from Hollywood for his sittings. We had about a five year relationship. I was writing on my book, MAD OUIJA when I met him. His book POST OFFICE was just published. I asked if he wanted to be sculpted, urged by my sister, Gerry, who wanted to meet a writer. Peter, at The Bridge, a poetry hole, told me he was the best poet in Los Angeles. My book LOVING AND HATING CHARLES BUKOWSKI is about our years together. His book WOMEN includes me as one of his women, Lydia. I have sold several of his sculptures in bronze. Bukowski seduced me with many love letters over the hill from Hollywood to Burbank after sittings. He also inspired a chapbook ME AND YOUR SOMETIMES LOVE POEMS and BUKOWSKI UNDIGESTED a collection of my poem about him.

POST ON LAWRENCE FERLINGHETTI (2021)

Press Release
cheap theatrix @Metro Arts announces
"Collateral Damage"

Raymond Shurtz, Artistic Director of cheap theatrix, has assembled plays from ten of Phoenix's finest playwrights to create "Collateral Damage". The show will consist of ten-minute plays by these playwrights in reaction to the painting 'Collateral Damage' (a living hell) by internationally known painter, Matt Sesow. This collaboration began several months ago after Mr. Shurtz contacted Mr. Sesow at his home in Washington D.C. in response to his stunning paintings involving the war in Iraq. Mr. Sesow agreed to paint a large 8'X 9' canvas which will serve as the center piece of the ten minute plays.

The playwrights, Brenda Edwards, Nick Newberry, Susan Simpson LaFave, Judith Eisenberg, Tom Wooler, Chuck Hinckley, Renee Simms, Gerry King, Linda King, and Raymond Shurtz, were selected during a two-month 'call to playwrights' period. The ten plays range from the very serious issues facing our soldiers in combat, to biting satire, from the left to the right, from the fallen to the risen. Seventeen actors will perform the over fifty roles required for this full-length production.

In addition, cheap theatrix and Metro Arts, will be exhibiting Matt Sesow's emotionally riveting work in the gallery adjacent to the main theatre before, after, and during intermission of all the performances. Mr. Sesow will be attending the opening along with the playwrights and performers. Music will be provided by 'Drawbridge', with the theatre performance of 'Collateral Damage' to follow.

Dates: April 1st, 2nd, 7th, 8th 9th, 15th , and16th.

Times: The April 1st opening will begin at 6:30pm for Mr. Sesow's exhibit, and 8:00pm for the theatrical performance of 'Collateral Damage' . All other shows will consist of a 7:00pm exhibit and the 8:00pm performance.

Location: Metro Arts Institute, 1700 N. 7th Avenue. (Just North of McDowell Rd. on the West side of 7th Avenue.

Tickets: $10 adults $8 students

‘There's still a war going on.
Nearly two years after President Bush. declared major combat operations over in Iraq, Valley playwright and director ‘Raymond Shurtz is contributing a wartime wake-up call with “Collateral Damage,” a theater production staging 10 plays, each 10 minutes long, written in response to a painting by Washington, D.C., artist Matt Sesow, exploring the ancillary effects of war.
“We've started to let our guard down a bit,” Shurtz says. “I want to keep the dialogue going.”
For the show, Shurtz, penned “American Eagle,” a piece of magical realism in which a mother prepares an eagle for family dinner.
Brenda Edwards’ “Wifedom” interweaves stories of wives from Iraq and Middle America with military spouses.
‘And Tom Wooler contributed a piece that finds television family the Cleavers (Leave It to Beaver") debating the war in Iraq,

show,” Shurtz says, “but I'm sure it has Its artistic protest.”
Shurtz— who co-founded Playwrights Workshop Theatre and, besides teaching drama at Metro Arts charter school, runs his own Cheap ‘Theatrix company — has a history of creating conceptual collective theater Pieces like this one, In 2002, he enlarged an artwork by French painter Balthus and invited five playwrights to write around it
This time, he scoured historical war Paintings before stumbling onto a Web site of Sesow’s war-themed paintings, “As soon as I saw them,” Shurtz says, “T immediately responded.”
Sesow, 38, 1s a former software ‘engineer for IBM who has established himself as a self-taught painter, He's known both for a childhood accident ‘with a landing airplane that resulted in the amputation of an arm and for Colorful, powerful abstract paintings that channel the artist’ inner demons and anger.
‘Sesow says he created “Collateral Damage (Living Helly" to shine a light on the grief and pain of war,
“The idea,” he says, "was a family caught in some bombing campaign.”
Coflins are lined up in a corner, and severed arms holding scimitars —a nod to Baghdad's “Hands of Victory” arches —lloat above. The artist's emotions, he says, are on full display in his exploration of death and suffering.
“Iwas traveling back from a solo show in Atlanta, and some guy stopped me and asked if was in the military, fT had just gotten back from Iraq, because Tm missing an arm and my hair Is cut short,” he says. “As a soclety, we have a {ot of feeling for those who are suffering,

‘The painter says he spent a week working on the large-format “Collateral Damage,” and that the 8-by-9-foot painting filed the floor of his cramped studio apartment. Sesow says he ‘accepted the alrhast pro bono Commission (Shurtz paid the cost of materials and for Sesow’s flight to come ‘0 opening night of the show; the piece will go on sale for $2,000 after the show Closes) because he's impressed by the artistic boldness of Shurtz and the Participating playwrights,
“The historical significance of taking a chance on something like this during a Nar is pretty ballsy,” Sesow says, “Sometimes we like to wait to see how Uuings shake out before we form our opinions on them.”
Shurtz expects audiences anticipating an evening of screaming, “Embedded"-style agitprop will be surprised by the varied tone of the plays resented in “Collateral Damage."
One poignant piece comes from Metro Arts humanities teacher Renee Simms, 38, who juxtaposes a news conference asking Americans to stop donating food {o military bomb-snifing dogs with a ‘Scene in which an Iraqi family dog, loose in the city after her home was desiroyed, contemplates eating a human corpse,
Other plays explore wartime Journalists, soldiers assigned to identify bodies and, in Chuck Hinckley’s “Chili Cheese Fries,” a soldier dealing with his frst kill — his interpreter and guide,
‘Shurtz says bringing the show together has sparked lively debate among cast members, and he hopes discussion continues with audiences. A self-described pacifist, Shurtz says the show has helped him further formulate hhis own opinions.
“Usually, when I don't know,” he says, “Tll do theater to find out.”

Wow ! I didn't even know she was still alive ! But it's because I didn't have in mind the big age difference between Buk and his girlfriends. Indeed, I'm now remembering that his former babes were 20 to 30 years younger than him, a lot of them must be still living then !

She's not as cute as the good old days, but she's still recognizable.

Does someone know what has become of the Bukowski bust ?

Concerning his paintings...I definitely prefer Buk as a writer.

The original clay bust was recently displayed at the Elephant Theatre in Hollywood, as part of the inaugural Bukowski 'festival'. And bronze versions are still available, for around $6,000 USD. Linda King has a website, here: http://www.lindakingarts.com/

I met a collector in Montreal last summer who was offered to buy the bonze bust for 2500. and had declined. I bet he regrets it now.

He also wanted to buy the painting of Buk and Georgia but I decided to keep it a little longer.

Perhaps I'm mistaken but I tend to believe that by-products really developed after his death. I can't imagine such products massively existing while he was alive, no ? Did Linda already sell her replica at that time ?

You're right; all the merchandizing started after he died. While Buk was alive there was only his own work and a limited amount of writing about him, some photographs available, but no refrigerator magnets or bobbleheads, nothing mass produced and marketed.

if I do have to have refrigerator magnets, I'd rather have some with Buk on them than, say, little kitten.

if I do have to have bookends or T-shirts with people on them or mugs with a witty quotation - I'd prefer Bukowski over Kermit the frog anytime.

What I find disturbing are not the writings, photos or postcards but the gadgets such as the magnets or bubbleheads you're quoting. Bukowski is Bukowski. He's not Britney Spears.

Concerning Linda's bust, I find it quite disconcerting that she turned an object symbolizing her relationship with Hank into a mere product.

Back in the day (late 60s, early 70s) it was inconceivable that anyone would make, or buy, a refrigerator magnet with Bukowski's face on it. I remember telling another poet that I thought someday Buk would be "big time," meaning commercial publication by the big New York houses, as opposed to small press, and he said no way. We both idolized Buk but my friend couldn't imagine the mainstream would ever embrace Bukowski. I saw the potential, but never imagined films based on his work, let alone mousepads and bobbleheads. And that the Huntington Library would feature his work was also inconceiveable. What next, action figures? The funny thing is, when he finally went big time, I imagined not hardcovers and trade paperbacks but those old Bantam mass market paperbacks, the kind that cost 95 cents. I envisoned "Post Office" as one of those.

... from the article... King's cut from the sale - she said she received $25,000 - wasn't enough to last long with moving costs and mounting medical bills, she said.

What? They sold for $69,000 and she only got $25,000? Who took the rest? I thought that the sellers paid a 10% premium and so did the buyers and that was the auction house cut. Something is either wrong or something is very wrong...

Maybe she sold them to the auctioneer for 25,000. and he put them up for auction for himself. Usually, the auction house takes 20%.

If a gallerist sells your art for instance, he or she takes 50-60 even 70%, which sucks big time but it is the market.

It makes me sad that Linda King only got $25,000 out the $69,000. My logic is not the best, but I see her as an important part of his life and his work, whereas the auction house is nothing. It reminds me somehow of a divorce, with all of it's passion and emotion, which gets converted, so often, to big money for the lawyers.

Bukowski landmark dedication / Bukowski Festival - 28 March

This was part of an email from painter Matt Sesow:

BUKOWSKI/LA: "Bukowski Undigested" lives... looks like we (Linda/Scott King) will be part of a show around a Bukowski landmark dedication in March. stay tuned... get the book by clicking HERE.

So apparently they (the self-congratulatory city hall types) will be breaking a bottle of champagne across the bow of 5124 DeLongpre some time in March.

I wonder if Linda will show, knowing her general distaste for the landmark status...

So City Hall is gonna celebrate "The Laureate Poet Of Skid Row", together with Linda King, outside his DeLongpre bungalow. Buk would've gotten a big laugh out of it...:D

Next, they'll erect a statue of him outside City Hall - made by Linda King!

They've already put up a statue of his buddy Al Purdy here in Hogtown.

You know, a life-sized statue of Bukowski sitting on a park bench with a bottle and a cigarette, in the right location... maybe Pershing Square(?), would not be a bad thing.

Or in MacArthur Perk where he used to hang out with Jane.

It would probably just get destroyed or stolen from MacArthur Park. Unless things have changed recently, that area is gangland.

MacArthur Park? Yeah, those fuckers would haul it away on the first night and a scrap metal dealer would have it cut into a hundred pieces before the sun came up. They will steal the wiring out of your car for a few cents worth of copper. Things are getting a little crazy in some parts of town.

If you think a bronze statue would be too heavy to steal, think again. You'd see them rolling it out of there balanced on top of a dozen rusty bikes, and you'd wonder, "How the fuck?..." Ha ha.

Think about it, if they have a dedication ceremony at Delongpre where will anyone park?
I'll go but I'll need a ride home.

Didn't someone write a song about MacArtur Park? Many years ago.

Richard Harris(yes, the actor). It's the "Someone left the cake out in the rain..." song.
Now I don't know if he wrote it, but he sang it and it was quite popular way back in the day. CRB:)

Jimmy Webb wrote the song, Richard Harris had the hit. Webb wrote "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" and "Galveston" amongst other songs.

More than you'll ever need to know on the song. The immortal cake out in the rain line coming from Auden? Why not?

Thank you D in B now someone needs to show up to the dedication with a sound system to play that song MacArthur Park. I'm sure it will be easy to convince the city council weasels that it was Bukowski's favorite song while he lived at DeLongpre.

I wrote to Matt and asked him.
Just got this letter from him:

howdy...

i am not for sure about much of anything with the march show
yet.. but i had been emailing scott king back and forth about it
earlier in the year. here's the info i have:

Charles Bukowski's house on 5124 De Longpre is now a City of
Los Angeles Historic Cultural. Landmark #912 named
Bukowski's Court.

This is where Charles Bukowski lived when his publisher John
Martin of Black Sparrow Press put him on a $100 monthly
stipend for life. This offer was his impetus to quit the Post
Office, where he had worked for almost 12 years straight, and
devote himself to writing. With a many beers and a fear of
writing, he produced Post Office in a few weeks. Experiences
with women on De Longpre would also inspire his watershed
novel, Women.

i'll email scott in the beginning of the year to figure out if it' a
go...

my best,
matt

I know. Isn't that embarassing? For those of you that do not know what we are talking about, they actually put up a life size statue of Rocky Balboa at the bottom of those stairs to the Philadelphia Museum of Art (These were the stairs that he ran up in the movie).

I cannot imagine a sillier idea. This really is a sad embarrassment to a really great town.

Because it sounds much better than just "Bukowski Show". ;)

LINDA KING: LOVING AND HATING CHARLES BUKOWSKI

FRI. JUNE 20, 7PM, 2014

There are many books about Charles Bukowski, but none like this one. Linda King’s Loving and Hating Charles Bukowski looks at Bukowski from the other side of the mirror. It is raw, it is raucous, it is a no-holds-barred account of their five-year on-again off-again relationship, a relationship so intense and passionate, so deep and so tender, that it makes your heart ache to watch it flame up and then flame out. This is not a scholarly examination of Bukowski but it deepens and enriches our understanding of the man and his world, written from the heart with love. It is funny, it is tragic, it is exuberant, it is heartbreaking, it is an important addition to our knowledge not only of the poet laureate of the underclass, but of the whole underground literary scene in LA and elsewhere in the 1970s, told from the perspective of a strong, liberated woman, an artist in her own right, who gave as good as she got.

Reviled by feminists and fanatically defended and mimicked by his cult-like followers, King shows Bukowski as both human, tender, loving, sensitive, abusive, mean-spirited and egotistical, a mass of contradictions and a hero or a devil, depending on which side of the mirror you see him from. As award-winning poet, writer and feminist, Sharon Doubiago writes of this book:

When Charles Bukowski met Linda King he met his match. Bukowski and his literary lovers have been prime examples of the misogynist, criminally sick and insane world. His inexplicable appeal to women has been part of the madness. King’s memoir “explains,” taking us deeper into our tragic human situation toward understanding, thus healing and transformation. Here’s what Buk looked like when he fell in love! Los Angeles and Utah are here too beyond the ignorant and damning stereotypes. And the sexually active mother: her portrayal of her children through the 5 year affair is delightful. “Liberated Linda” is right! Loving and hating Charles Bukowski will never be the same.

Wild Ocean Press, in collaboration with KissKill Press, is pleased to publish a second edition of Loving & Hating Charles Bukowski, completely edited and revised from an earlier version published in 2012.

Linda King (born 1940) is an American sculptor, playwright and poet.[1] She is best known for having been the girlfriend of American writer Charles Bukowski for several years in the early 1970s.[2]

Personal life

Born in 1940, King grew up in Boulder, Utah.[3] She first married early in life, divorcing after 10 years.[4] During the 1970s, King edited the literary magazine, Purr.[5] King was an actress before she became a sculptor and poet.[4] King has two children.[3]

Relationship With Charles Bukowski

In 1970, shortly after the end of her marriage, King met Charles Bukowski and offered to make a sculpture of his head.[4] He accepted her offer, and they soon became romantically involved. King was 30 years old and Bukowski was about 20 years her senior when they started their relationship.[1] The relationship has been documented as volatile, turbulent and even physically abusive. On one occasion in 1971, Bukowski broke her nose during an argument.[4] On another occasion, King and Bukowski were accommodated at the City Lights apartment in San Francisco, after a reading at the City Lights Poets Theater.[6] By the following morning there was a broken window and a panel smashed in the door, and King had disappeared. Bukowski blamed her for the damage.[6]

Bukowski's stage debut was as an actor in King’s play Only a Tenant in which she and Bukowski stage-read the first act at the Pasadena Museum of the Artist.[7]

Bukowski and King finally split up for good in 1975, when one night an intoxicated King threw Bukowski's typewriter and books onto the street, angry at his infidelities.[1] The incident is detailed in Bukowski's novel Women, whose leading character, Lydia Vance, is based on King.[1] The same year, King left Los Angeles for Phoenix, because of what she described as "one extended nervous breakdown".[2]

She said of their relationship:

It wasn't that he had other women. It's that he always wanted me to know about them, always wanted to tell me all the details about what they did together. Who does that unless they really want to make you mad?[1]

After Bukowski

King remarried and had a third child. The marriage also ended in divorce.[3] She worked as a bartender, waitress, and a part-time care-giver for the elderly.[2] She sold her own traditional portrait busts in clay, and published poems. One in particular, printed in 1997, references Bukowski: "I am the woman who knows for sure that Bukowski's balls were bigger I am the woman who knows that he liked hot chilies in his stew".[2]

In 2004, Phoenix's Paper Heart Gallery featured her paintings, busts and poems, along with documentary films about Bukowski, in a show entitled Friends and Foes of Charles Bukowski.[2]

In 2009, she sold 60 love letters written to her by Bukowski at auction in San Francisco's PBA Galleries.[1] The same year, in order to be nearer to her grandchildren, King moved from Phoenix into an apartment in the Sunset District of San Francisco.[1] In September 2009, she was one of the three poets in the presentation Tales of Bukowski & the Late 1960s LA Poetry Scene: A Reading & Report by Key Poet/Participants at Bird & Beckett Books & Records in San Francisco.[5]

In addition to her bust of Bukowski, King also sculpted busts of Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Jack Micheline, Harold Norse, and A. D. Winans. Her play Singing Bullets was staged as part of a showcase by Phoenix's Metro Arts Institute.

King has also sold an edition of at least 15 bronzes of Bukowski.[1]

Bibliography

King wrote a book Loving and Hating Bukowski.[1] She also has written seven collections of poetry:

Curled Inside the Curve of His Body…
I Danced With a Man Last Night
The Elephant Chronicles
Exposed
The Savageness of My Discontent
Sweet and Dirty
The World is Not What I Thought

Her poetry has been published in a wide variety of magazines, including The Bukowski Review and Wormwood Review.

One of my favorite and most amazing opportunities was being asked by Linda King to create some artwork inspired by her poems in a book "Bukowski Undigested". Linda was Charles Bukowski's girlfriend in the early 1970's. She has some of my paintings hanging next to some of Bukowski's work in Utah. Here is a pic she just sent me:

  21. A collection with a HUGE variety of my art and Dana Ellyn is holding a winter sale at https://www.jskwrd.com/matt-sesow They also have a facebook presence at Jskwrd I don't receive any funds from the sales of these paintings, I am just letting people know that might want some of my older and more significant pieces that "jskwrd" is making available. The collection includes some art that I did in the Solomon Islands while working as a Peace Corps volunteer, some from my stint with GeekCorps in Bulgaria, paintings from my wedding show, several works I created in the early 90's, work from a poetry book created with Bukowski muse Linda King, and a ton of other great paintings covering the last 30 years!

  24. "Poets" available at https://new.sesow.com A painting by Matt Sesow titled “Poets.” It features nine individual portraits arranged in a 3x3 grid. Each square contains the expressive, raw face of a poet drawn in bold black lines with aggressive brushstrokes. The background has tones of pale yellow, pink, and red, giving each frame a distinct but unified feeling. The portraits are emotional, with distorted features and visible tension. The nine poets featured in the piece are: 1. Emily Dickinson 2. Charles Bukowski 3. Hunter S. Thompson 4. John Berryman 5. Dylan Thomas 6. Paul Verlaine 7. Sergei Yesenin 8. Sylvia Plath 9. Edgar Allan Poe Some have tightly closed or barred mouths. All have intense, expressive eyes. The mood is haunting, honoring the weight of their voices and the struggles they carried.

  25. This has been one of the (thankfully many) highlights of my life/art career. THANK YOU Linda King! #bukowski #lindaking #sesow #mattsesow #charlesbukowski
