The American Visionary Art Museum gave Matt Sesow its third-floor gallery for a full year. The announcement opened with a line from Dickens: “I have been bent and broken, but – I hope – into a better shape.” On the walls were his salute to the first 100 American soldiers killed in the Iraq War, animals and birds, tributes to great humanitarians, autobiographical paintings, and an illustrated “Key” to the icons that recur in his work.
Matt came back one Saturday a month to talk with visitors beside the paintings. When the show closed, the museum kept 26 of them for its permanent collection.
