Twenty-two years with the American Visionary Art Museum
Matt with his paintings in AVAM’s permanent collection, 2017

The American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore is the national museum for self-taught artists, and it has been part of Matt Sesow’s life since 2004, when his paintings first hung there. In 2016 it gave him a full year in its third-floor gallery, “Shock and Awe,” with more than 150 paintings, and then kept 26 of them for its permanent collection.

Since then he has talked in its galleries, hosted its docents in his studio, sold paintings in its SideShow shop, presented a painting to its founder Rebecca Alban Hoffberger, and in 2026 the museum lent his “Identical Twins” to the New Bedford Art Museum to hang beside Alice Neel.

And several of the artists, such as the young Washington artist Matt Sesow, seem to have been included because they've got interesting biographies rather than having much connection to the curatorial theme.

Mike Giuliano, Howard County Times, 2004-10-14

In their words

With vibrant color, raw detail, and a unique perspective, the exhibit features more than 150 original artworks, including paintings honoring the first 100 U.S. soldiers killed in the Iraq War, alongside others inspired by fantastical birds and Sesow’s own life.

Jessica Kim Cohen with Amy Mulvihill, Baltimore magazine, “The Launch: Best Events, May 2016”

In their words

This is probably the hardest show I’ve ever prepared for. I wanted it to be right. I’m really honored to be here.

About the Exhibition "The simple truth known to the brokenhearted, the mystic, and the physicist: what we think solid is not. What most of us believe constitutes the "real" material world - the stuff we can reach out, touch, hold, buy, and see - physicists all agree is actually not solid at all. In fact, what appears "solid" or material in our world is really 99.999999999999 percent empty space made "solid" by a miniscule fraction of matter that may not even be matter but wavelets of energy. Light is a particle that, when we try and measure it by passing it through a narrow opening, behaves just like an ocean wave passing through a narrow harbor. Once through the slender opening, light wave and water wave fan out, each forming a crescent pattern. A far more accurate characterization of our universe would be ‘fluid’….” - These words,

written by Rebecca Hoffberger, inspired Maya Angelou to call to say how personally meaningful they were to her. From fantastical mermaids to environmental concerns, all things water were artfully explored in a year that began with the Indonesian Tsunami and ended with Katrina, the storm that inundated New Orleans.

'Visionary' Artists Bring Personal Struggle to Work Wed Oct 20, 2004 09:26 AM ET By Cate Hescox BALTIMORE (Reuters) - Matt Sesow has taken a winding path toward becoming an artist. When he was 8, his left arm was amputated after an airplane propeller struck him. He grew up, became a computer programer, took up painting as a way to meet people and did a stint in the Solomon Islands as a Peace Corps volunteer. But art soon developed into more than a pastime; his paintings became a way of dealing with his childhood trauma and he began working on his art full time.

Sesow didn't have any formal art training, but his work is gaining recognition in the small but growing world of socalled visionary art. The genre -- sometimes called outsider art, art brut or contemporary folk art -- groups works by self-trained artists who deal with very personal issues, often their own disabilities or emotional problems. Two of Sesow's paintings are part of a new exhibit at the American Visionary Art Museum (AVAM) in Baltimore, which was founded in 1995 and is the first U.S. museum dedicated to visionary art.

Through his art, Sesow worked through the emotional knots created by his childhood accident.

AVAM founder and Director Rebecca Hoffberger was working for the department of psychiatry at a local hospital and got the idea for the museum in 1983.

"I really wanted a place that was structured toward (people) who appreciate and value the great creativity," Hoffberger said.

Dedicated by an act of Congress, the museum was funded primarily by her husband, LeRoy Hoffberger, from a wealthy Baltimore family, Anita Roddick, founder of The Body Shop cosmetics firm, and Zanvyl Krieger, a lawyer and sports entrepreneur.

After nine years, AVAM is growing and next month opens an addition that doubles its exhibit space and adds classrooms and workshops.

'FLUID UNIVERSE' The museum's latest exhibit, "Holy H2O: Fluid Universe" explores all aspects of water and runs until September 2005. Along with Sesow's work, there are over 150 different works by 40 different artists. They include: - A huge kinetic sculpture of Coney Island, a historic amusement park located in New York, by Tom Duncan, who began making art when he was 4-years-old after his aunt gave him his first clay set.

- A floor-to-ceiling aquarium made of fish from mostly recycled beer bottle caps by Mr. Imagination (Gregory Womack), who describes himself as a collector of cast off objects.

- A 7-foot sculpture and altar room, which contains over 100 pounds of beads, glitter and sequins dedicated to "La Siren," a mermaid goddess by Nancy Josephson. Her work is inspired by her visits to Haiti and her spiritual journey of becoming a Voodoo priestess.

John Maizels, editor of Raw Vision Magazine, said visionary art is generally self-taught art that exposes the artist's inner depths.

Some might think of visionary art as folk art. But while folk art is also self taught, Hoffberger said, it differs by being "learned at the knee" and passed from generation to generation.

Visionary art has influenced other art genres, especially contemporary art, but there are differences, Maizels said. "Contemporary art is very foreboding and the impact of visionary art is immediate," he said Sesow's paintings communicate the emotional power of his healing. One of his works in the AVAM exhibit, titled "Out of Water," depicts in loose, abstracted brush strokes and bright colors a scuba diver emerging from water. On his goggles is a line with three crosses that Sesow uses to symbolize the trauma of his childhood accident. For years after his hand was amputated Sesow wore prosthetics, but about a year after he started painting, he gained confidence and stopped wearing his artificial hand.

Sesow feels freed now that he doesn't have to try to be and look like something he isn't. "At first it was a difficult decision," Sesow said. "But after taking the 'electric hand' off for good, some great things happened. I noticed people actually stared less at me. It was as if the stiff, sometimes green hand had caused more questions and attention to my disability than not wearing it." © Reuters 2004. All Rights Reserved.

Holy H20: Fluid Universe

In this world there is nothing softer or thinner than water But to compel the hard and unyielding, Ithas no equal. That the weak overcomes the strong, That the hard gives way to the gentle - This everyone knows, Yet no one acts accordingly.

The simple truth known to the brokenhearted, the mystic, and the physicist: what we think solid is not. What most of us believe constitutes the "real" material world - the stuff we can reach out, touch, hold, buy, and see - physicists all agree is actually not solid at all. In fact, What appears “solid” or material in our world is reall 99,999999999999 percent empty space made "solid" by a miniscule fraction of matter that may not even be matter but wavelets of energy. Light is a particle that when we try and measure by passing it through a narrow opening behaves just like an ocean wave passing through a narrow harbor. Once through the slender opening, light wave and water wave fan out, each forming a crescent pattem. A far more accurate characterization of our Universe would be “fluid.”

Even our human bodies are far more fluid than they are solid. Like earth we are mostly water-both in the range of 70%. Even human bones that feel so substantial are themselves 30% water and on close examination reveal pockmarked patterns of tiny rhythmic holes that mimic the flow of water that pits flow pattems into seabed rock. Our eyeballs, the very same by which we read these words, are washed 25 times a minute by water squirted from tiny ducts. Aquatic by nature, we begin life in a fluid mix, are nurtured in womb waters, born to suckle milk land continue to take in fluids to survive. As the Koran sura 21.30 puts it, "We are made from water every living thing

UNDERSEA CHARIOT Andre Blaise

Fanta=Sea

Deep below the ocean's surface, sea creatures that may never be brought to light compete with those that live only in our imagination for “most bizarre assemblage” honors. ‘The six-inch “vampire squid from hell,” Vampyroteuthis infemalis, has eyes the size of a large dog's. The female angler fish, or triplewart sea devil, has a lightable lure dangling on a long stalk above her eyes. And the viperfish, Chauliodus sloani, has long lower fangs that project all the way back to its eyes. If deep-sea fish resemble fantasy, could fish resembling those that artists imagine be brought up from the depths one day’?

=] Water as a Door to | Initiation and the Spirit U5] World

Many of the world’s most moving ‘communal rituals revolve around water and its power to cleanse and invigorate far more than just our bodies. Specific rivers, springs,

| wells, and lakes have long been

synonymous with healing

divination, initiation, or baptism.

unten spirit For the Hindus i's the sacred PAINTING River Ganges, for Christians the 28 Murry River Jordan, for the Greeks the

River Styx, and for the ancient Egyptians the sacred Nile. Native Americans revered specific lakes believed to be repositories for powerful spirits

Still water was also humanity's first mirror, permitting the first reflected glimpse of oneself. The act of staring into water, rock crystal, polished metal, or mirror for purposes of divining images of the future or information from the spirit world was called “scrying.” Scrying and crystal

gazing were widespread in fifth century Europe, so much so it was officially condemned by the medieval Christian Church as the work of the Devil, but later revived in the Victorian era as a popular pastime.

Forms of baptism exist throughout most of the world's cultures. Water submersion—total, partial, or sprinkled—accompanied by words of directed intent is symbolic of bestowing new life and consecrating a new relationship between body and spirit. Water, capable of becoming a crystal when frozen, was perceived as a natural magnifier of thought with particular benefit in magnifying spoken blessing. This belief is at the heart of why we lift our glasses to speak a word of blessing over wine and alcohol—wishing the other honoree “cheers, good health, and blessing. Many creative people observe that their best ideas come to them while taking a shower.

Orthodox Jewish observance mandates the use of ritual baths in free flowing waters—mikvah—for both men and women. Tashlich is the name of another water-based Jewish ritual tradition performed in observance of the Jewish New Year. The word tashlich comes from the Hebrew verb “to throw,” in which observant Jews bring bits of bread to throw into a body of water, preferably one with live fish, to symbolically cast off sins accumulated in the past year and to publicly affirm God's Kingship.

LA SIREN SHRINE ‘Nancy Josephson

La Siren

"Vodou is one of the inspirational forces behind the rich abundance of painters, metalworkers, and flag-makers in Haiti. The role of priest and artist is often interchangeable, as the netherworld they inhabit, between spirit and material, is enlightened by dream and imagination. Art has become the material expression of the Vodou faith.”

Vodou “was born in west and central Africa and traveled on the transatlantic slave ships to the New World, where it flourished in Haiti, on the island of Hispaniola. Vodou is characterized by ceremony, music, dance and sacrifice, through which participants commune with the spirits of their ancestors via divine possession.”

La Siren is the queen of the ocean, called upon every time a boat is pushed out into the water. La Siren is a temptress, but also fierce and powerful. “The mermaid spirit La Siren beckons those at sea to return to Ginen, the tranquil ancestral home below the choppy waves of life and the ocean. The ambiguity of her allure lies between the fear of drowning and the strong infantile desire to retum to the Mammy Waters, the spiritual refuge. This is a choice that faced many of the slaves on the barbarous joumey from Africa to the West Indies, as the sea was the only escape from the savagery of slavery.”

—Leah Gordon, The Book of Vodou

UNTITLED LAS SIREN en CONSORT George Vaiis

The Sacred Flags of Haiti

Where the sacred slams into the secular, you'll find the sequin banners of Haiti. The exuberant display of devotion is realized as the tireless process of sewing sequins and beads to fabric blossoms into a dynamic offering or invitation to any one of the hundred of spirits of the Vodou pantheon

‘The sacred flags, or drapo Vodou, are unfurled at the beginning of a ceremony, acing as a “call to order.” The beauty of the invitation speaks of the artist's desire to honor the spirit or lwa depicted in the flag.

Typically, the sequin-covered measure 36” x 36” with a decorative border with the name of the spirit written at the top and the name of the artist written at the bottom. An

average flag will be covered with as many as 20,000 sequins, all applied by hand.

Troubled Water

Thirty-five years ago, Jacques Cousteau wamed: “Only recently have we become aware of how severely we are plundering our planet. Some argue that pollution always existed, that we should be no more upset by the extinction of the bald eagle than that of the dinosaurs. This ignores the basic fact that we are no longer in a slow evolution process but in a violent explosive one. No comparison is possible. There are no precedents. We have to face the danger as a new kind of human peril that only human measures can remedy. The life cycle and the water cycle are inseparable; we must save our oceans and waterways if we are to save mankind.” Today, if anything, the pace has accelerated—there is lead in our water and mercury in the fish we eat. New biomonitoring tests reveal “body burdens’ of DDTs and PCBs, chemical pollutants banned some 20 years ago. In England, the federal Environment Agency recently found birth control pills in sewage to blame for widespread evidence of sex changes in river fish. The female hormones—1,000 times more powerful than natural ones—feminized the male fish, leaving them unable to reproduce.

‘The pure drinking water we need to replenish our personal stores is becoming harder and harder to obtain. In 2002 the United Nations estimated that 1.1 billion people have ino access to safe drinking water, 2.5 billion lack proper sanitation and more than 5 million people die from waterborne diseases each year—10 times the number of war casualties. In early 2004, a secret Pentagon report warned that “catastrophic” shortages of potable water and energy will lead to widespread war by 2020, with the United States becoming a “virtual fortress” trying to keep ‘out millions of migrants whose homelands have been wiped out by rising sea levels or made unfarmable by drought

Water Like Stone

In the bleak midwinter Frosty wind made moan, Earth stood hard as iron, Water like a stone; Snow had fallen, snow on snow, Snow on snow, In the bleak midwinter, Long ago.

—English poet Christina G. Rossetti

Why is snow white? Snow is made of small ice crystals, and close inspection reveals that the individual crystals are pretty clear. However when light travels from air to ice, or vice versa, some light is reflected (like the way light reflects slightly from a pane of glass). Since there are a lot of airlice surfaces in a bank of snow, light shining into the snow gets scattered about many times. After bouncing around a while inside the snow bank, some of the light scatters

back out, and that is the light we see. Since all colors are scattered roughly equally well, the snow bank appears white.

—A Snowflake Primer by Caltech Physics Professor Kenneth G. Libbrecht,

Afloat

Ships at a distance have every man’s wish on board.

"| For many the romance of the sea is embodied in ships. The romance of travel, the mystery of the depths, the challenge of staying afloat are all found at sea, whether one is working or playing. As the Book of Common Prayer expresses it: “They that go down to the sea in ships; and ‘occupy their business in great waters; these men see the

uvriTLeo works of the Lord; and His

‘Mark Casey Mlestone wonders in the deep.”

SLAVE SHIP Tom Duncan

Not all ships embody romance. Historically, some have been vehicles of extraordinary pain. During the slave trade, some 50 million human beings were seized from their native Africa and loaded onto ships. The journey was nightmarish. As described by Howard Zinn in A People’s History of the United States, people were packed “in spaces not much bigger than coffins, chained together in the dark, wet slime of the ship's bottom, choking in the stench of their own excretment.” The space between the decks was sometimes as litle as 18 inches, so that the the occupants couldn't even turn on their sides, much

the occupants couldn't even tum on their sides, much less stand up.

CONEY ISLAND Tom Duncan

Coney Island

People have always taken their leisure by the sea, their minds and bodies simultaneously relaxed and invigorated by the waters. The words “two weeks at the beach” have become synonymous with vacation. Nowhere has the phenomenon been more fully expressed than at Coney Island, which in its heyday teemed with as much life and energy as the ocean itself. According to historian Elliot Willensky, Coney Island at the tum of the century was “a forest of glittering electric towers and a riot of rides, restaurants, recreated disasters, freak shows, and historical displays.” As described by the PBS show “Coney Island,” there was a simulated trip to the moon, the largest herd of show elephants in the world, and huge moving panoramas showing the Creation, the End of the World, and Hell. There were re-enactments of the Boer ‘War and the Fall of Pompeii, and an Infant incubator where premature babies were placed on display. An Inexhaustible Cow with mechanical udders dispensed limitless glasses of milk and 300 litle persons inhabited the perfect miniature town known as Liliputia year-round.

A Deluge of Water Works

By Michael O'Sullivan

Washington Post Staff Writer

Friday, October 29, 2004

"WHERE

IS the water?," you might find yourself wondering at some point as you

wander through the American Visionary Art Museum's newest, aqua-themed

exhibition, "Holy H2O: Fluid Universe."

I'm not talking about

Baltimore's Inner Harbor either, the view of which will soon disappear

as construction proceeds on the Ritz-Carlton Residences, a luxury condo

project taking shape just across the street from the museum and its new

wing (scheduled to open to the public Nov. 16). I'm talking about art.

While

water is certainly prominent in this show -- most notably and literally

in a burbling fountain at the center of a mermaid-centric installation

by artist and voodoo practitioner Nancy Josephson -- there are certain

works whose connection to the sea around us is tangential, or

technical, at best. Washington artist Matt Sesow's "Out of Water," for

example, which depicts, in deceptively prosaic fashion, a man in a wet

suit, or Los Angeles-born Christopher Moses' twisted, Disneyesque,

cartoon sea creatures may strike you initially as having only the most

tenuous connection to the notion of a "Fluid Universe."

That's

probably because asking "Where is the water?" is asking the wrong

question to begin with. "Where isn't it?," the show seems to reply.

Water,

after all, doesn't just reside in the oceans, streams, lakes and

swimming pools of the world, but in the very air we breathe. It's in

the snow and ice of winter, the rains of spring, the humidity of summer

and in the leaves that fall in autumn. It's in the fruits and

vegetables we eat. We drink it, sweat it, bathe in it, excrete it and

then, further down the line, drink it in again. We are, in fact, mostly

made of it. It is there even when it doesn't appear to be there.

That's

one reading of "Fluid Universe." Water is primal, ubiquitous. It's why

so many of us are drawn to it like lemmings, as is so evident in Tom

Duncan's "Dedicated to Coney Island," a wonderfully sprawling,

miniaturized and motorized rendition of the beachside resort that,

along with Josephson's room-size sculpture, hogs the show's center

Shock and Awe Hits the American Visionary Art Museum Matt Sesow’s Solo Exhibit at AVAM Explores An Artist’s Experience with Tragedy and Loss By Brendan L. Smith · BmoreArt · June 20, 2016 The long, improbable journey that led self-taught D.C. artist Matt Sesow to his first solo museum exhibition began when he was 8 years old, playing on a rural grassy air strip beneath a darkening sky in the flatlands of Nebraska. While playing a game called Spud with other children, Sesow threw a ball high in the air and reached upward to catch it while a small plane swooped silently toward the earth behind him, practicing a manual landing with its engine turned off. The 19-year-old novice pilot didn’t notice Sesow, and his upstretched left arm was instantly severed above the elbow by the plane’s propeller.

The local newspaper article about the accident downplays its magnitude, stating that Sesow was listed in fair condition at a nearby hospital. He underwent several painful surgeries but his left hand couldn’t be reattached, and his arm ends at his left elbow. Decades later, after running track and playing high-school football, after winning a Mensa scholarship and being crowned homecoming king at the University of Tulsa, and after moving to D.C. to work as an IBM software engineer, Sesow tried painting on a lark to impress a woman at a party in 1994. Since then, he has ditched the IBM job to create art fulltime, and his stark, brutal style has attracted a wide audience, leading to exhibitions across the United States and Europe. His current solo exhibition called “Matt Sesow: Shock and Awe” features more than 150 paintings in the American Visionary Art Museum’s third-floor gallery.

“This is probably the hardest show I’ve ever prepared for. I wanted it to be right,” Sesow told BmoreArt at a museum reception on June 5. “I’m really honored to be here.”

Fallen Soldiers (Iraq War 2003)

Sesow has funneled much of his grief and anger over his traumatic accident into his work. His bug-eyed animals and distorted human figures, often displaying large toothy grins or severed limbs, seem to revel in the grotesque, but a closer look reveals a shy vulnerability and sly sense of humor. The vagaries of life in this workaday world are often beset with tragedy but also by triumphs, both of the body and spirit.

Curated by AVAM founder and director Rebecca Hoffberger, Sesow’s exhibition features work of both a personal and political persuasion, challenging the jingoism of U.S. foreign policy with 100 small portraits of soldiers killed during the Iraq War. Sesow’s work, which invites comparisons to Jean-Michel Basquiat and Francis Bacon, features totem-like imagery with recurring themes.

On a column in the gallery, Sesow explains the icons which repeatedly appear in his work as fully formed figures or small chalkboard-like drawings floating in the periphery. Not surprisingly, an airplane represents evil as “THE GREAT AMPUTATOR,” both from Sesow’s personal history but also as bombers raining violence from the skies. A bottle with three X’s is “the source of inspiration but also maybe a place to pain.” A large scar represents one of his many

surgeries, while a bunny reveals his gentle nature. A skeletal man wearing a top hat with a dollar sign has money on his mind and is “often the gallery manager.”

Although he works with galleries, Sesow sells much of his artwork directly to buyers through social media and visits to the tiny condo he converted into a studio by ripping out the oven and dishwasher, building a loft for his bed to make room for more canvases. He splits his time there and at the condominium/studio of his wife Dana Ellyn, a fellow artist with whom he often collaborates with in joint exhibitions.

Two Halves of “Two Sides to Every Story”

One of Sesow’s most compelling works created for the AVAM show hangs on wires between two pillars, revealing paintings on both sides of the canvas. Called “Two Sides to Every Story,” one side features an angel pointing skyward and pulling the hand of a frightened, naked boy with a severed hand, offering the comfort of death over the struggles of life. A small plane floats in the sky overhead while a wind sock flutters in the distance. On the other side of the canvas, Sesow’s life unfolds in 56 vignettes representing both monumental and trivial chapters. The saga starts with an angry, drooling man crouched in front of a computer and ends with a less angry man painting a self-portrait. “Matt Sesow: Shock and Awe” will be on display at the American Visionary Art Museum until June 4, 2017. Brendan L. Smith is a freelance journalist, mixed-media artist, and father of two rambunctious boys in Washington, D.C.

About the Exhibition "I have been bent and broken, but – I hope – into a better shape." –Charles Dickens AVAM is thrilled to announce an all-new original art exhibition, MATT SESOW: Shock and Awe. Washington, D.C.based self-taught artist Matt Sesow's "raw, visceral, good to the bone" paintings will be displayed in the museum's third floor gallery of its Zanvyl A. Krieger Main Building beginning Memorial Day Weekend 2016 (Friday, May 27, 2016) and remain on view thru May 28, 2017. Among the original 150 plus works on display, visitors will witness Sesow's salute to the first 100 American soldiers killed in the Iraq War, his fantastical depictions of animals and birds, personalized tributes to great humanitarians, his own autobiographical paintings, and an illustrated "Key" to understanding the artist's repeated singular language icons. Curated by museum Founder and Director, Rebecca Alban Hoffberger, this will be the first exclusive showing of Sesow's work at AVAM.

An impressive new set of my original paintings now available directly from Sideshow at the American Visionary Art Museum. The collection also includes some Dana Ellyn and a handful of our 'defiled' series paintings. Be sure to visit them next time you are in Baltimore and pick up an original piece of art!

2024 · Baltimore Magazine — Sideshow at AVAM named G.O.A.T. of Baltimore

Congrats to Sideshow at the American Visionary Art Museum and Ted for the great writeup in the latest issue of Baltimore magazine!

"American Visionary Art Museum
The G.O.A.T. of Baltimore museum shops is without a doubt Sideshow at the American Visionary Art Museum in Federal Hill. Owned by renegade retailer Ted Frankel, aka “Uncle Fun,” Sideshow is one-part outsider art gallery and one-part tchotchke dreamscape. Local filmmaker John Waters describes it as “the best museum gift shop you’ve ever been to in your life,” and clearly the man knows what he is talking about."

Late next month, I will be introducing my NEW studio GOLEM... It will watch over me for the remaining half of my art career and creation here in Washington, DC. stay tuned for more info on this amazing piece of art that has a TON of story and significance... in the meantime, here is my first studio GOLEM that watched over me for the first half of my art career. It ended its service as part of the year-long solo exhibition i had at the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore, MD. pictured here. I sold it, and i can't remember off the top of my head who has it now... onward! Matt Sesow:

More on the first GOLEM (pictured)...
This is my ‘Studio Golem’. it “protects my back” and watches over my studio and me while I paint or have my back to the door or my painting studio.

I created this using a popcorn tin that my parents sent me as a Christmas present in 2011.
