A flaky bumper sticker can so ably sum up the twisted priorities of government spending: “It will be a great day when our schools get all the money they need and the Air Force has to hold a bake sale to buy a bomber.” In response to flattening financial support from both public and private sources, which led to the announcement of layoffs at the Whitman-Walker Clinic this June, the indie community offers its own version of homemade brownies and apple pie to support the clinic: a punk-rock-benefit-show-cum-eBay-art-auction. This effort, co-sponsored by the ubiquitous Positive Force D.C., may produce only a drop in the ocean of funding needed to combat HIV/AIDS in the District, but the event should elicit admiration for its organizers’ unflagging DIY ambition—and shame on the part of the negligent policymakers who make this work necessary. The music and auction (which includes concert posters signed by Fugazi’s Ian MacKaye and Bad Religion’s Brian Baker as well as works by local artists Lely Constantinople and Matt Sesow) begin at 8 p.m. at Cafe Mawonaj, 624 T St. NW. $6 (proceeds benefit the Whitman-Walker Clinic’s Lesbian Services Program). (202) 332-4480. (Justin Moyer)
