id, Peace Corps, and he is accompanying her to the
Solomon Islands. When Sesow was cight years old,
a landing airplane hit and severed his left arm, forc-
ing him to become right-handed. The physical and
emotional pain of that trauma has left a clear mark
on Matt Sesow’s artworks, In 1994, at the age of 28,
he began painting. As his dealer Beverly Sue Kaye
says, “His titles, such as ‘Painting by Remembers,’
‘Lost Luggage,’ ‘Alone in Death,’ ‘Sucker Punch,’ and
‘Waiting for Coagulation, are more than subtle hints
of the turmoil he has experienced.” Bloodred
grounds, orange averted eyes and heavily oudined
figures are his hallmark. He paines all day, using oil
on canvas and cardboard. His subject matter is always
the human form in some sort of sorrowful state.
