The Larz from Mars Show #125 — Matt Sesow and Dana Ellyn (2010)

TV — "The Larz from Mars Show," episode #125 (taped October 2009; episode master dated January 27, 2010), produced at Arlington Independent Media, Arlington, VA: Sesow and Dana Ellyn, engaged, are the guests of host Larz LaComa — selling art online and directly to collectors, their February 5, 2010 wedding show "Till Death Do Us Part," and paintings held up to the cameras. The full 29-minute episode and transcript are on the page.

Larz LaComa's Larz from Mars Show was made at Arlington Independent Media, the public-access studio in Arlington, Virginia, and ran on cable in the Washington area from at least 2003 to 2010: a tie-dye set, a desk stacked with cans of Spam, a mannequin, a lava lamp, comedy bits, a live band and a couch for guests. For episode #125 the guests on the couch were Matt Sesow and Dana Ellyn, then engaged. It was taped in October 2009 (Dana mentions a Long View Gallery opening "this Thursday, October 22nd") and the episode master is dated January 27, 2010. Their "associate" Andrew held their paintings up to the cameras one by one — Matt's "Just the Head" and "Buckaroo" ($600), Dana's "When Pigs Fly (Not Even Then)" — while they talked about selling art online and directly to collectors ("the internet is probably 90% of my sales"), Dana's paintings making CNN and USA Today, and their wedding at the opening of their show "Till Death Do Us Part" at Long View Gallery on February 5, 2010. The band was Mobius Strip.

TRANSCRIPT
[0:00–2:14] Opening: the title card, a comic street skit and a song about Washington, DC, performed by the episode's band, Mobius Strip (lyrics not transcribed).

[2:14] Okay, okay, okay, where are we? Come on, come on, everybody. Ruling. Imagination, come on, where are we? We're at Larz from Mars. We are in Washington DC. No we're not. You'll be the first one to tell us. And we're painters. You are not in DC. And we're in Larz from Mars and we just want everybody to like us. We're rolling high on Larz from Mars.

[2:59] Hey! I'm here. Hi Larz. Dana. Matt. Andrew. Welcome to the show. Can't talk to him. I'm not going to talk to him because he's your assistant. Associate. Oh that's even better. He's your associate. Yes, and he's come here to associate with you. Yes, that's what he does. Anytime you want him to pull a painting, he will go get a painting and bring it forward. Now it's funny you should say that because you're both artists. Yes. Go get a painting. Go! Fetch! Andrew! He's gonna go fetch a painting. I bet you he's gonna get one of Matt's. He's gonna go fetch a painting. Will he pick one? He's gonna pick one of Matt's. Do you know which one he'll pick? Andrew, no, no, no. Oh, no, no, no, get that one. I don't know. No, no, don't get one of hers.

[3:41] He might need to be decisive. Andrew, come on. Come on. Probably pick Matt's. He paints in the ears. All right, so this is a painting. No, you two paint for it. Sit next to Matt. You got to sit down again. Sitting down. So Andrew is my associate. I guess just hold it up in front of your face. He's not supposed to say anything. There you go. And then lean in. I'm a painter in DC. So which painting did you get? Oh, it's the one of the bird. It's called just the head. Just the head. Yeah. What does that mean? Why am I laughing? It means that some people like zinc. I don't know. What could possibly that painting mean?

[4:24] Why am I laughing? I'm marrying him, really? It's called just the head. It's for zinc deficiency people. Yeah, it's just the head. People with the zinc deficiency, they understand. Zinc? Zinc. Okay. That's what men are good for. It's like the dirtiest painting I've ever done. Right out of the gates. Okay, we're good. Alright, let's get another one. Go get another one. Go get another one. Maybe perhaps we can buy Dana Ellyn. I don't know. So now get one of mine and then we'll get one of Dana Ellyn's. Alright, let's get Buckaroo. Buckaroo, Buckaroo, Buckaroo, Buckaroo. Buckaroo. No! Or one he chooses. No, this is one of Dana Ellyn's. This is one of mine. Hey Larz, what do you think this one's about? It's for just the head. It's called Just the Head. Wow. It was a tip. It's not.

[5:07] No, it's actually called When Pigs Fly. When Pigs Fly. Or a subtitle, Not Even Then. The idea being never, you know, the only time babies are coming out of bed? Exactly. With a vacuum. So, you're getting married? Is that wrong for cable? I don't know. I don't think that we have any limits or boundaries here. So yeah, we're getting married. When? February 5th. Yeah. Wow. At a show. What is it called? On a public access show? When is this gonna show? You should be there. When is this gonna show? We're not, in the future. Okay. You should be at our show. February 5th at Long View. [crosstalk] No, it's not okay.

[5:49] Long View Gallery. Please fix that, okay. Oh my word. Long View Gallery. I know this gallery. February 5th. He's been there. Seven. Yes. [unclear] is like the most amazing person of all the time. Yeah, we're gonna have a show. It's called Till Death Do Us Part. It's gonna be a wedding. And we're getting, like people are gonna come to the opening reception and be like, what's going on over there? And then we're gonna get married. Where are you going? A wedding show party. Uh-oh. Ask for a party. Okay. All right, hold on, hold on, hold on. I have a question. Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on. Do you wanna answer? No, he's gonna ask a question maybe. What's the question, Larz? Where's the honeymoon going to be? Well, potentially. Protencer. Protencer. Did I have a beer before I came here? Maybe.

[6:31] Potentially, honeymoon in Serbia. Serbia. the show called honeymoon in serbia there's a there's a two-person show two-person show in serbia just like the two-person show in d c that's going to be till death to us part and we get married at the open i have a lot of friends from serbia you do yes i do my friend braco darko um... a lir who are some of the other people? yeah so we're getting married in d c at our opening and then we'll have our honeymoon in serbia yeah so please come And thus the painting, there's going to be no children. This is my, this is what the painting. Well, who needs children? I don't like children. I like other people's kids.

[7:13] And animals. And dolls. And dolls. So, what else do you wanna know about? I wanna know how you guys feel about the ways that the internet has changed. I think this is Matt's interview now. It's my interview now. You're busy. Okay, talk to me please. your world. How has the technology and how has the internet changed? I think the internet... The business aspect. Of being able to make a living as an artist. The thing that I always tell people in galleries and stuff is that the internet is probably 90% of my sales. If you're an artist and you want to be a painter and you want to be an online artist, I guess, I think the thing to do is to keep your prices very low.

[8:04] The thing is, when you go to a gallery show and you see a painter that you may or may not know, and they sell their painting, which is like a little 11 by 14 canvas for like $1,000, and you're like, oh my god, I could do that for like $100. dollars. Okay. Yeah and that's what I'm all about is like let's like take the reality of what it's like to be an actual painter and you know and do it the right way. I think the bigger question if I may like perhaps is a discussion about the middleman. So why do you go to a gallery and although we love the galleries that I mean I love the galleries I work with. Yeah we have really good galleries.

[8:56] Adore. The galleries I work with, I love to adore them and they do tremendous things but in the bigger scope it's like if you are kind of Joe Schmo when you walk into Joe Schmo Gallery and you see something randomly, perhaps maybe you look up the artist directly and you deal with them directly. It's a like the travel agent has kind of gone away so I think perhaps perchance maybe the galleries might go the same way but like some of them should stay in existence. like we love and adore the ones we work with. And they're not a bad thing. There's actually some really great galleries of Russian. You see like Long View Gallery is a great gallery. Gallery Plan B is a great gallery. Those are great galleries.

[9:40] [unclear], Mayer Fine Art is a great gallery in Norfolk, Virginia. In the bigger scope, people who are just buying art and like just walking and things like, oh, it's fantastic. Could you go grab that one over there, please? Yeah, I think there's a like. I just like go get that one. Customer thing that they need to understand like maybe perhaps you call the artist directly and you find out what the painting means who's the gallery may or may not know and they may or may not be marking it up. So it's helped your business as well. Oh yeah, fantastically. And what about your message of blasphemy? My message of blasphemy seems to have been broadcasted all over the world like up to like CNN USA Today a couple weeks ago. Right. Yeah, I mean I paint, I happen to be like a non-theist I guess would be like the general and you're gonna cut in, I know, any second.

[10:28] You're theist-less. No, I'm theist-less. And Matt's gonna try to steal the show because it's his, it's all about Matt and I love him. But yeah, I made it to CNN USA today last week and it's all because of Matt, really. No, it's not. But yeah, so like I happen to have a series of paintings that deal with his bottom, no, that deal with my non-theism and my agnosticism And the story made its way to CNN USA today. But my staying out of the limelight, like he can't, is that it's not all that represents me. So it's a huge, huge thing to get on the news and be with Matt. But it's not all that defines me.

[11:12] So I've been trying to kind of keep it on track and not grab it completely and be my 15 minutes because it's not all I stand for. Right. So the technology has been good. It's been fantastic. It's gotten me out and it's gotten me a huge amount of exposure. So Larz, you should- I want to know about this painting at [Andrew’s holding]. Excellent. Let's ask specific questions. Okay, so this painting here is called Buckaroo. This painting is going to be shown at the Long View Gallery opening reception, the Big Gala, which is like huge. Long View Gallery is like the best gallery. Where is it at?

[11:54] 9th and... And if I may, how did you get into Long View? No, please come on, let's go. Like 9th and... N. Convention Center. I don't know. 9th and N. 1234. 9th Street, Northwest. It's a fantastic gallery, Long View Gallery, you should go. I'm gonna have this painting and some other paintings, very outside art. you're like you're gonna see other painters in DC that are like oh this is a $10,000 painting and you can see my painting. This painting is $600. $600. So this could be hanging above your fireplace for nothing and that's what I'm all about. Like I am Matt Sesow, I am Washington to DC, I am here for you.

[12:43] And if I may follow up on that. So Long View Gallery shows this Thursday, October 22nd at Long View and the painting I have in it if I might follow up is something I started four or five months ago before the press happened. She charges more than I do. Yeah I do. And the painting I'm going to have in it is called Making Up Jesus and it's a seven foot by four foot painting and it's Jesus as he may perhaps have looked like and he's looking for attention like dark skin, dark eyes, dark hair and he's getting his hair foiled and he has blue contacts being put in by cherubs and white makeup being put on because in his time and place perhaps Jesus would have been [unclear] — dark hair, dark skin. I didn't know him.

[13:27] I don't even really follow him. Anyway, so you should come see both of us because it's very different and his are cheaper. Yes. Okay. So, all right, so. But we adore each other. We do each other. We love each other. We're gonna get married. Do you wanna ask about that? You wanna ask about the wedding? I think you did. Well, we talked about the wedding. I was blacked out of it. Yeah, I know. Oh, awesome. Okay, so, so here's the deal. Honeymoon in Serbia. Honeymoon in Serbia. Wedding in Long View. Do you wanna recap? Larz from Mars. Website. You're first, because you know, you're not the best. What's your website? Poopie, poopie, poopie.com.

[14:11] Poopie, poopie, poopie.com. That's my website, poopie.com. Go visit poopie.com and you can see all the poopies. And you can buy artwork. [crosstalk] No, I don't. I don't care. Oh, she's so, yeah, whatever, whatever. I love you, I love Larz. I'm here for Larz. We love it when you're here. Yeah, so. And I don't mean after all, I'm sorry about that. I apologize. I apologize. You did okay. He just likes to look at himself on TV. I love seeing this. Be the madman. Okay, so. It's exciting.

[14:56] And then I had spoken to Matt. because i thought that there was an opportunity for me there to be his butler not associate but actually an assistant you know to be his butler for life for life yeah that would be great and so since after the wedding we are going to continue to live separately do whatever you wish in his apartment yeah oh really you're going to live separate oh we are not changing anything oh he's going to start stripping It's hard on the microphone. It is. No one can hear you anymore. Look at this. That's what I'm hearing. All right, have a seat. All right, so yeah, we're not changing anything.

[15:40] You might want to not focus. [unclear] Look at the star. Look at me. I love you. Well done. Well done. Okay, we're gonna take a break. We're gonna take a break. I really wanna thank you guys for coming down and we'll see you at the wedding. I hope you do. I hope the crew comes. I feel obligated to come and film it. I'm sure that we're the same individuals. Nothing better than you coming to film the wedding. Okay. Please. And then we'll have it on the Larz from Mars show. Please do. Absolutely. Cause the subtitle of the wedding, although it's called Till Death Do Us Part, we had kind of a running joke between us, cause it would have been really unromantic call it [unclear].

[16:28] We'll have a taste. Not really. Not at all. Anyway, thank you. Thank you. Thanks.

[16:35–27:40] Mobius Strip plays a live set on the show's stage (lyrics not transcribed).

[27:40–29:20] End credits (see the page images above).
