About the Artist
Matt Sesow, a Washington DC based artist, began painting at age 28. He is a self taught artist whose work is often categorized as "Art Brut" or "Outsider". Besides his prolific work as a painter, Matt is also an accomplished writer of short stories and poems, as well as a film maker. His paintings are compassionate, expressive and often provoke the viewer to confront the more emotional and disturbing experiences of life.
Comments on the Work
Impacted is one in a series of Portraits by Matt Sesow. This particular series inhabits a darker environment than earlier works of this genre. They express the emotions and images so often seen on the faces of the people during the events of 9/11 2001. Although Portraiture in the traditional sense often is a recreationof the physical features of a specific individual, portraiture in abstract goes beyond mere surface replication. It depicts the emotions, sensations and inner turmoil dwelling below the surface through the Artists use of color, texture, shapes and line. These elements come together to initiate a response from the viewer. Often the first response is subconscious. Feelings my surface within the viewer that cannot be logically associated with any recent events or stimulus. Abstract art often bypasses logical reasoning as it engages the subconscious mind with creative images and spontaneous thoughts.
